Why you should work with a travel agent for your Disney vacation

Until a few years ago, I didn’t know you could work with a travel agent to make the plans for your Disney vacation.

My vision of a travel agent was circa 1980, when my dad would have his secretary coordinate with a travel agency to plan work trips abroad. I am pretty sure those agencies charged a hefty amount for their services. I assumed that’s the way things worked.

Then, at a Girl Scout meeting, I was chatting with a friend who’d just returned from a big trip to Walt Disney World. She told me she’d worked with a travel agent, and that it had made a big difference for her family. She’s a busy teacher, married with three active kids with different levels of vacation needs.

I knew that this was a big trip for them, that they’d saved for a couple of years to have a blowout time. So when she told me she’d worked with a travel agent I was kind of shocked, because that seemed like a luxury service for someone on a budget.

Then she told me she paid nothing for the travel agent’s help.

Well, that made me perk up and listen a lot more closely! I learned a lot from my friend that day, and that set me on the journey to where I am today — planning vacations for clients to Disney destinations as a side hustle.

Reasons to work with a travel agent who specializes in Disney destinations

The most obvious reason to work with a Disney travel agent is because it’s free. Every Walt Disney Travel Company vacation package price includes a commission for a planner automatically built in. If a planner is not used and guests book directly through Disney, the Disney Travel Company itself reabsorbs that planning fee without providing that service.

Another reason is because of my expertise. I’m fully trained in Disney destinations, policies and procedures. Every year I renew my certification as an authorized Disney planner, completing Disney training in the Disney College of Knowledge.

My expertise stems not just from my training, but also because I was a cast member at Disneyland for several years. I also worked at Disneyland Paris for a summer. In 1995, I represented the Disneyland cast as their ambassador — the official host, spokesperson and emissary of goodwill to the world. Once an ambassador, always an ambassador.

I still have lots of friends who work at the Disney parks and in various locations in The Walt Disney Company, so I’m up to date on what’s happening in the parks.

You need a Disney travel agent because it’s my job

You should work with a Disney travel agent (preferably me), because it’s my job. I do this every day. I know Disney destinations and what I don’t know I can get directly from Disney or from my agency colleagues. Yes, you can plan your Disney vacation, but why take on the load all by yourself? Get some help from an expert who does this for multiple clients, every day.

What’s the catch?

It feels like there should be a catch — someone does work for you for free? But truly, there is no catch. Disney pays me to help you. When I plan your vacation I’ll give you options to choose from — a vacation that suits your family’s needs. If things change (and believe me, they do), or if you have questions (you will), I will adjust your trip and answer those questions. You don’t have to figure it out — I will.

Many times with a Disney vacation you have to change the dates you’re traveling, or someone is added or removed from your trip. Or you need to add something on to make the trip more special. Sometimes those things can only be done by calling into Disney. If that’s the case, I’ll call in to Disney — sometimes waiting on hold for hours to make the change.
